  3.                          THE BBS INTERFACE SYSTEM

  6. Welcome to BIS (version 2.0)!  BIS is a powerful OS interface which allows
  7. users of the WA7MBL BBS program to interface to other programs, DOS
  8. commands and BAT files you, the sysop, may want to make available to them.
  9. It allows users to run any number of different external programs which you
  10. specify.  In its original form in versions 1.2 and 1.3, the only external
  11. program allowed was a search program.  The older versions of BIS worked in
  12. conjunction with FGREP.COM to allow users to search BBS subdirectories and
  13. databases contained on your BBS computer for files containing information
  14. they may wish to download or for information stored in databases or lists.
  15. In version 2.0, the SEARCH function is fully retained and improved, but
  16. you will find the ability to call other external programs may be just what
  17. you were waiting for.

  19. The SEARCH function, which is partially internal to BIS, allows users to
  20. find the information they are looking for hidden deep within the cryptic
  21. file names of your BBS files.  In addition, if files are properly set
  22. up with a SUBJECT: line, users can search all files in a particular
  23. subdirectory and obtain a complete list of the subjects of the files
  24. contained in the subdirectory.  This makes the tedious and frustrating
  25. job of maintaining subject lists and index files of your BBS files
  26. totally unnecessary.

  28. Please take the time to read the documentation for FGREP.COM to under-
  29. stand its operation and definitely read both documentation files for
  30. BIS.  Also included on this disk are archived files of K4NGC, Don
  31. Bennett's excellent compilation of World Wide Digipeaters and BBS's
  32. formatted in a useful way for BIS searches.  You can de-arch the files
  33. using PKXARC.EXE which is included on the MBL BBS distribution disk.
  34. ALSO....PLEASE read the "PRECAUTIONS" section carefully in BIS.DOC,
  35. the original documentation file for previous versions.

  37. For those who receive this program via U.S. mail directly from W9LZQ,
  38. my distribution fund is running low.  Postage, mailers and disks are
  39. fairly cheap on an individual basis, but when doing multiple mailings
  40. of the program, the cost can get a little out of hand.  I would 
  41. appreciate a small dondation to cover these costs, but please, no more
  42. than $5.00.  For those who receive the program by other means, no
  43. donation is requested, but PLEASE, EVERYONE remember to register your
  44. program.  It only costs 25 cents to do it and assures that you will
  45. be notified of further updates.  In addition, if sysops come up with
  46. some real nice applications to run as external programs, we will 
  47. distribute them to those that have registered, assuming the distribution
  48. fund is "in the black".

  50. For those who have previously registered either version 1.2 or 1.3, 
  51. please re-register version 2.0.  I would like to get an update on
  52. your equipment and comments after having used the previous versions.
